A song in the night

When she was a baby, my daughter never sleeps – at least not for a prolonged period of time. At the most, she would only doze off for about 30 minutes before staying awake for the next 3-4 hours.

And that’s bad news for the parents – especially at night when both of us were exhausted but we could not sleep because the little girl wouldn’t sleep! When she did not sleep she made sure no one else slept ~ by wailing as loud as her little lungs could cry out! The only way to quieten her was to carry her in our arms.

Eventually, we devised a plan. We would take turns staying up to keep the baby company. We took 2-hour-shifts. One partner would go to sleep while the other carry the girl and after 2 hours we would switch roles.

At least, that way, we got some precious sleep.

Yesterday in church, we sang a song that opened a floodgate of memories of those many sleepless nights as I cradled my daughter in my arms and paced to and fro in the room while my wife slept ~ singing this song softly to her, repeating perhaps a few dozen times in a span of 2 hours, trying to coax her to sleep:

Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak but He is strong

Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
For the Bible tells me so

It was to be another 10 months before she slept like a normal person and in those 10 months, she must have heard this song a thousand times over. The tune of this song is simple and yet the message is true.

One day, when I am old, hard of hearing, dependent and finds it hard to sleep at night, she might return the favour and sing me this song then. :)
