Jimbo was taking a group of Semester 6 students recently for their end-of-posting (EOP) exam. One of them, in wanting to describe the patient’s eye-opening, said this:
“As for eye opening, it is 3 out of 4!”
It took Jimbo awhile to realise that the student was referring to the Glasgow Coma Scale where he was referring to the grading of eye opening in a patient:
1: not opening eyes
2: open eyes to pain
3: open eyes to call
4: open eyes spontaneously
He meant that the patient opens his eyes to call (Grade 3) and not that he has 4 eyes and opens 3 of them! LOL!
