Marathon

Jimbo ran in his first marathon today. Pictures and story will be out on Tuesday (27 May 2008).

Suffice to say, Jimbo did it within qualification time. :)

For a sneak-peak story from another perspective, go read YY’s account of the run.

Appreciating Art

I do not profess to be an art connoisseur. I mean, I wouldn’t recognise a Van Gogh or a Picasso even if I walk right into one! A while ago a patient of mine gave me this:

Now, before you point a double-barrel gun at me and accuse me of accepting bribes, let me explain.

When I first attended to him almost half a year ago, he was at death’s door, his body ravaged by the terminal stages of AIDS along with its many complications. Over the next few months, he made a remarkable recovery, thanks to the anti-HIV medications and other antibiotics he was put on.

This man was an artist by profession, and because of his illness, he could not work for months, which meant he had no income. His mother supported him during the initial months when he battled the disease.

He told me his story when I visited him at his studio. When he first discovered he has HIV/AIDS, he said his paintings took on a dark and sinister tone. Everything was dark according to him. He painted night and darkness. He painted shadows and gloom.

As he made the slow recovery to health, his paintings changed as well. Now the darkness and gloom are pierced with shafts of light. I wish you could see what he was painting when I saw him that day. It was a picture of a forest with shafts of light piercing through the canopy of the foliage.

Over at another corner was an unfinished picture of sunflowers, in all its yellow brilliance. He said, a friend told him to start painting in bright colors, symbolizing the end of the dark journey that he has been through.

He looked good that day. I met him downstairs. He raced upstairs way ahead of me, without a hint of the severe breathlessness that almost claimed his life just less than a year ago.

And the picture above? He insisted that I take it. He said it was one of his first few efforts and it held a great sentimental value for him. And he wanted me to have it.

Now it hangs on one of the 4 walls in my room. I have pleasant thoughts when I look at it every time. :)
