A day at FRIM
Last week I blogged about my experience walking on the canopy walk with my son in FRIM (Forest Research Institute of Malaysia). Let me share with you now some pictures I took that day.
We were taken on a guided tour by a guide. First stop was this bridge over a lake where a few giant fish lives (I forgot it’s name – you can see it at the Giant in Senawang, Seremban)
Our guide, the bespectacled Chinese man doing a Saturday Night Fever move in this picture, was a no-nonsense guy. He started the tour by saying “I am your tour guide, and I expect you to listen to me. I will be very upset if you don’t!”
Extensive network of superficial roots.
Giant bamboo trees.
The ground was littered with these flowers from the ‘Kapur’ tree.
One last look at the bamboos….
And then we started what would be a one hour hike up this hill.
Picture of my son. I like this picture, it’s a bit ‘predatory’ (The movie ‘Predator’ comes to mind!)
Long sinewy vines crawling up trees.
And if you are looking for another good reason to visit the FRIM, besides the Canopy Walk, this is it….
Aren’t they spectacular?!!! I was totally awed by what I saw when I looked up. Our guide told us that these pictures were featured in many prominent magazines, including the National Geographics.
What we saw was the canopy (from below) of the Dryobalanops Aromatica (or Kapur tree, whose flowers we saw earlier).
If you are thinking of going, please consider bringing along insect repellents. The mosquitoes in there were huge! Reminds of me the movie ‘Jumanji’!
Vines crawling up a tall tree.
Ferns perched high up on trees.
This tree had these weird protuberances.
There are a lot of butterflies there too, and evidently very unafraid of human beings as can be seen in the picture above.
Well, that’s it. I have a video to share. I will post that one later.
