Med School
A medical student caught up with me the other day. In between breathless gasps, she said “Dr. can I have a copy of the picture pasted on your door?”
I smiled and said “Just google ‘Never Give Up’!”
This is the picture on my door. 
Let’s face it. Med School is tough. Back when I was an undergrad in med school, I found the academic work overwhelming and there were times when I felt like giving up and calling it quits.
Two things stopped me from quiting.
1. My belief that medicine is a calling
2. And the efforts I put in to encourage myself when the times were tough. Call it self hypnosis if you like, or positive thinking.
Okay, 3 things:
3. I was in India and if I didn’t finish the course, my dad was so going to kill me! Besides I had no money to fly home!
And so littered across my medical notes were tiny little memos-to-self like:
Pharmacology is easy!! ( you can substitute ‘pharmacology’ with any other subjects)
Never give up!!
You can do it!
Carpe diem!
Make hay while the sun shines, heck, make it even if it doesn’t shine!
And a host of Bible verses to push me on.
I also had drawings pasted into my book, wall, door, cupboard doors etc etc.
I have one like the picture above. It was one of my favourite then and still is. Now it’s pasted on my office door for others to be encouraged.
And I like this phrase from NIKE: Impossible Is Nothing !
