One needs the patience of a saint when taking my boy for a hair cut. Though he has no fear of cockroaches (yet), he has an absolute aversion to the barber’s electric hair clipper (I am not sure of its exact term to describe that thing).
In this respect, Ryan is on opposite pole from his daddy. I totally enjoyed all the hair cuts I have ever had (errr, well, except one which I had while I was a HO in KL. The ‘barber’ whom I thought was a lady turned out to be a male! She, er, I mean ‘he’ did a great job. It was just that it was unexpected. I was so naive then). I enjoyed the sensation I feel when the hair is being trimmed. It’s very soothing and often times I fall asleep on the chair! (Very embarrassing when the barber had to wake me up when it’s done).
Not so my son.
He would squirm here and there, tilting and bobbing his head this way and that way, making the whole thing an ordeal for him, his parents and the poor barber (and all the other waitng customers).
Ryan’s first hair cut was a disaster. He was almost a year old then. The barber was this Pakistani man who probably didn’t understand my instructions. When I told him to “cut it a little short”, he went the whole way and the final result was a toddler monk! He probably took the easy way out: cut everything off rather than deal with a hypermobile toddler head.
I took Ryan for a hair cut last week. Thank God the barber was very patient (I think the fasting month might have a good effect rendering him more benevolent). Not only did I have to struggle putting him on the chair (he wanted his daddy to go first), he also gave the barber a really hard time by moving here and there. It’s probably easier to catch a mosquito with chopsticks.
The end product was an “uneven finish”. Sigh.
Later he had the cheek to complain that his hair no longer stay down when he tried to comb it!
Next time, I’ll let his mummy take him.

nahh…
AM’s hypothesis #2: it’s the smell of hairspray bah…
Abby’s mummy, your account is hilarious. I wonder if there is a scientific term for it? Could it be cephalo-colonic reflex?
Errr, ok, kiddie animal themed seats, lollipop, powder, no diapers, and nyquil. Got it! Thanks guys.
My son… he will need a lollipop in his mouth to go through such ordeal.
Though it is unhygienic, at least he will let the hairdresser finish her job
when Abby got her first haircut she had a monster poop. then she started screaming and scrambling around so much that her diaper got malpositioned and everything overflowed onto my lap and the barber’s chair.
we gave them a big tip, and we will never return
My mother used to have to give me some children’s nyquil so that I’d behave when my hair was cut. I guess it was the only way. I’d go nuts in hair salons. Now, of course, I love them.
next time try pouring tonnes of powder on neck and wheere ever the electric hair clipper gonna kena his skin..then he wont rasa liao..
hahaha…LOL… boy paling hate his head kena cut botak esp against his wish becoz he will get laughed by people..I m also one of them.
I have seen salons with animal-themed seats for the kiddies. Should make life easier for the barber.
Thanks Jimbo. At least hubby doesn’t call him “pineapple head” nowadays after a haircut!
I confess I have often threatened to shave all his hair off/give him a crewcut whenever he squirms or whines too much (guess this is what happened with your son’s first haircut!)
I’ve seen your son and I think you did a fine job with his hair. I wouldn’t dare venture into cutting my own son’s hair. Let me do a liver biopsy anytime but not that!
Haha reminds me of my son who hates having his hair cut as well. The difference is I don’t think he will tolerate a hairdresser, so I’ve been cutting his hair all these years. (maybe something you would like to think about for your son?)
I’d like to think I’ve gotten better with all that practice but occassionally I’ve had uneven results when he suddenly moves his head. I used to use only a scissors, as he did not like buzzing noises too when young. Nowadays he tolerates the electiric clipper which I use for the back as it gives a more even finish. I still use a scissors to layer to top and front.
